Make Your Morning Free of Neck Pain

Do find yourself waking up with neck pain every morning? Does your neck begin to ache after just an hour or two in the office? If so, you are not alone; neck pain affects nearly every adult at some point in their lifetime. Dr. Rivano frequently sees patients in our Florham Park clinic suffering from ongoing neck pain. It's important to establish whether or not your neck pain is a result of a cervical disc herniation, arthritis, or other spinal dysfunction. Other than these underlying conditions, there are several everyday habits that could be contributing to your neck pain. Here are some strategies to help make your morning free of neck pain:

  1. Use better sleep posture. If you wake up feeling like you have a “kink in your neck,” your sleep posture is likely to blame. Sleep on your back or side using a soft but supportive pillow. When sleeping on your side, make sure to place a pillow between your legs to prevent any back pain. Avoid sleeping on your stomach or with a firm pillow, which forces your neck into an awkward position.

  2. Pay attention to office ergonomics. When arriving at your workplace, always be sure that you are using correct ergonomic positioning. If you work at a computer, you should be looking straight ahead at the top third of the monitor, not near the bottom of the monitor. Make sure you do not have to tilt your neck up or down to view the screen. Your back should be straight up against the chair, which promotes proper neck posture.

  3. Exercise your neck. If you start to experience neck pain as your morning progresses, take a few minutes out of your day to stretch your neck. Gently tilt your head up and down, and from side to side, to stretch the neck muscles.
